Air Conditioning Installation: your top questions
Should I replace my AC and furnace at the same time?
If one is past 12 years, often yes — the install labour overlaps and SEER/AFUE synergy matters (a mismatched blower can hurt both). We'll run the numbers both ways so you can decide with eyes open.
What size AC do I need?
It's not 'per square foot'. It's a function of insulation, windows, ceiling height, orientation, shading, ductwork, and infiltration. Oversized AC short-cycles (humid, uncomfortable, worse than right-sized). Undersized AC runs constantly. A proper Manual J takes about an hour and pays for itself.
Is a heat pump a better choice than central AC?
In the GTA, increasingly yes — a cold-climate heat pump (Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat, Carrier Infinity 24, Lennox SL25XPV) handles cooling and provides most of your heat down to -25°C, with dramatically better efficiency than a standard AC + furnace combo.
