Ignitor (Hot Surface Ignitor)

The component that lights the gas in modern furnaces — replaces the old standing pilot light.

Hot Surface Ignitors (HSI) glow red-hot to ignite the gas at startup. They're more reliable than standing pilots and consume less gas. Lifespan: 7–12 years in residential use.

Failure mode: the silicon-carbide element gets brittle and cracks. The furnace tries to ignite, fails, locks out. You hear the inducer fan run for 30 seconds, then silence.

Replacement is simple — we carry the common ignitors on the truck. ~$150–$250 service-call total.

Don't touch a hot ignitor with bare fingers — skin oil shortens its life. Always handle from the ceramic base.
