Compressor

The pump at the heart of every AC and heat pump — circulates refrigerant and does most of the work.

The compressor is the noisy thing in your outdoor AC unit. Its job: take low-pressure gas refrigerant from the indoor coil, compress it to high pressure, and send it to the outdoor coil to release heat.

Three types: scroll (most common, reliable, mid-priced), reciprocating (older, cheaper, noisier), and inverter / variable-speed (newest, quietest, most efficient — adjusts capacity continuously).

A failed compressor is usually the death of an older AC. Replacement cost on a 12+ year old unit is rarely worth it — the rest of the system is at end-of-life too. We give you both numbers (repair vs replace) so you can decide.
