Blower motor

The motor that drives the fan that pushes conditioned air through your ductwork.

Two main types: PSC (permanent split capacitor — older, single-speed, cheap, less efficient) and ECM (electronically commutated motor — variable-speed, quiet, more efficient, longer life).

New furnaces in 2026 ship with ECM blowers as standard. Upgrading the blower on an older furnace (~$600 part + labour) usually doesn't pay back unless the existing PSC has failed.

Common blower issues: bad capacitor (PSC type — easy fix), dirty wheel (cleaning), worn bearings (replace motor), failed control board on ECM. We test amp draw on every service call.
