Components
The indoor coil where refrigerant absorbs heat from your home's air.
The evaporator coil sits inside your air handler or atop your furnace. Refrigerant enters the coil cold and low-pressure; warm air from your home blows across it; heat transfers to the refrigerant and goes outside.
A dirty evaporator coil is a quiet efficiency killer. Dust accumulates over years (filters only catch ~80% of fine particles), insulating the coil and dropping heat transfer. We pull the coil and clean it as part of any major service or whenever AC capacity has dropped without an obvious cause.
A frozen evaporator coil is a different problem — see "AC freezing up."
