Ratings & sizing

Tons of cooling

Same as tonnage. 1 ton = 12,000 BTU/hr of cooling capacity.

The "ton" of cooling comes from how much heat is needed to melt 1 ton of ice in 24 hours: 288,000 BTU per day, or 12,000 BTU/hr.

When sizing an AC for a Mississauga home:
- ~700-900 sq ft per ton for a moderate, well-insulated home
- ~500-600 sq ft per ton for a poorly-insulated 1970s build
- Always do a Manual J — these rules of thumb are starting points only
