Airflow & ducts
Heat Recovery Ventilator — pulls in fresh outdoor air and recovers most of the heat from outgoing stale air.
An HRV exchanges air at a controlled rate (~50–80 CFM in a typical home) without losing the heat. Two airstreams pass through a heat-exchange core, transferring up to 90% of the heat from one to the other.
Why you need one: modern homes are airtight. Without ventilation you get rising CO₂, condensation, mould, and stale air. An HRV gives you clean air without the heat-loss penalty of opening windows.
HRV transfers heat only — not moisture. In dry winter climates that's ideal. In mixed climates (Toronto, Mississauga) most homeowners are better with an ERV, which also transfers humidity.
