R-454B
The new low-GWP refrigerant replacing R-410A in residential systems starting 2025.
R-454B has roughly 78% lower global-warming potential than R-410A — major win for emissions. It's classed as "mildly flammable" (A2L), which means new installations follow updated codes for charge limits and detector placement. In a typical residential install, this is invisible to the homeowner.
If you're getting a new central AC or heat pump installed in 2026, ask whether it's R-454B compatible. Equipment we install now is. Refrigerant matters because regulatory changes drive equipment lifecycle decisions — buying R-410A in 2026 means buying into a phasing-down platform.
