Refrigerants
The dominant residential refrigerant since R-22 was phased out — itself being phased down through 2025–2030.
R-410A replaced R-22 starting around 2010 because it doesn't damage the ozone layer. Most existing AC systems in 2026 still use R-410A. However, R-410A has a high global-warming potential (GWP) and is being phased down in favour of low-GWP refrigerants.
New systems installed in 2026 should use R-454B (the new low-GWP residential standard) where possible. Existing R-410A equipment will continue to be serviceable for many years — supply is plentiful and prices are stable for now. There's no urgency to replace a working R-410A unit, but on a new install, R-454B is the future-proof choice.
