Refrigerants

R-22 (Freon)

An older refrigerant phased out in 2020 — if your AC still uses it, replacement is in your near future.

R-22 is the refrigerant in any central AC made before about 2010. Production and import were banned in Canada in 2020 because R-22 damages the ozone layer. Existing supply is reclaimed-only and prices keep climbing — a refill in 2026 can cost $150+/lb, and an AC takes 6–12 lbs.

If your AC system uses R-22 and develops a leak, the math almost always says replace, not repair. A new R-410A or R-454B system avoids the refrigerant trap entirely. Look at the label on the outdoor unit — if it says "R-22" or "HCFC-22," start budgeting for replacement.
