Thermostat

The device that tells your HVAC system when to run.

Modern thermostats fall into three classes:
- **Programmable:** schedule-based setbacks. ~$80–$150.
- **Smart (Wi-Fi):** learns your patterns, accepts remote control, integrates with home automation. Nest, Ecobee, Honeywell — $200–$300.
- **Communicating:** purpose-built for high-end variable-speed equipment, talks to the furnace digitally instead of via simple on/off relays.

A good Wi-Fi thermostat saves 5–15% on heating + cooling for most homes — payback in 1–2 years. The biggest gains come from setbacks while you're at work or asleep.

If you have a heat pump, get a thermostat designed for heat pumps (most modern ones are) — old AC-only thermostats short-cycle heat pumps in shoulder seasons.
