Efficiency ratings
Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio — measures how efficient an AC is over a typical cooling season.
SEER divides the cooling output (BTU) by electrical input (watts) over a season. Higher = more efficient. The minimum legal SEER for new central AC in Canada is 14. Mid-tier units run 16–18 SEER. Premium variable-speed units hit 20+ SEER.
In 2023 the test was updated to SEER2, which uses higher static-pressure conditions and yields slightly lower numbers. A 14 SEER AC under the old test is roughly 13.4 SEER2. When comparing models, make sure both quotes use the same standard.
For a Mississauga home running AC ~600 hours per summer, jumping from 13 SEER to 17 SEER saves around $80–$120/year — payback of 7–10 years on the upgrade premium. SEER matters more in hotter climates.
