HSPF

Heating Seasonal Performance Factor — how efficient a heat pump is at heating over a typical winter.

HSPF is the heating-mode equivalent of SEER. It expresses BTU of heat output per watt of electrical input, averaged over a heating season. Higher = better. Minimum legal HSPF in Canada is 8.2; cold-climate heat pumps run 10–13 HSPF.

A new metric, HSPF2, replaced HSPF in 2023. HSPF2 numbers are 15–20% lower for the same equipment because of stricter test conditions.

For a heat pump in Mississauga, every 1.0 increase in HSPF saves ~$60/year on heating electricity. The premium for a cold-climate model (HSPF2 9.5+) over a basic model (8.0) typically pays back in 4–6 years AND keeps you warm down to -25°C.
