Troubleshooting

Water Heater Leaking

Quick answer

Where the leak is matters. Top connections = a fix. Around the temperature/pressure relief valve = adjustable. From the tank itself = replace, today.

Common causes

  • Loose connections at top

    easy

Hot/cold water connections can loosen with thermal cycling. Tighten with a wrench.

  • T&P valve dripping

    moderate

Pressure-relief valve doing its job — pressure or temp too high. Check the gauge first; replace the valve if it stays open at normal pressure.

  • Drain valve at the bottom

    easy

Plastic drain valves crack. Easy replacement.

  • Tank itself

    urgent

Pinhole leak from internal corrosion. No fix — the tank's done. Replace ASAP before it bursts.

DIY first

  • 1 Wipe everything dry, then trace the leak source — top, side, valve, or seam at the base.
  • 2 If from the tank: shut off cold water supply (valve at top) and shut off gas/electric. Don't run the tank empty.
  • 3 Photograph the leak source and send to us.

Call us if:

  • Leak is from the tank itself (always — replace before it bursts)
  • T&P valve dripping continuously
  • You can't shut off the water supply
