Troubleshooting

House Too Humid in Summer

Quick answer

An oversized AC short-cycles and doesn't run long enough to dehumidify. Other causes: dirty coil, undersized return ducts, no dedicated dehumidifier.

Common causes

  • AC oversized

    moderate

Hits temp setpoint in 4 minutes, shuts off. Doesn't run long enough to pull moisture. Solution: variable-speed or right-sized replacement.

  • Coil too dirty

    easy

Dust insulates the coil → less moisture condenses on it → less dehumidification.

  • Air leaks pulling humid air

    moderate

Negative pressure inside pulls humid summer air through cracks. Air-seal the home.

  • Whole-home humidifier left ON

    easy

Some homes leave the humidifier on year-round. Turn it OFF in summer.

  • Need a dedicated dehumidifier

    moderate

In a tight, well-built home, the AC alone can't keep up. Add a whole-home dehumidifier.

DIY first

  • 1 Confirm the humidifier is OFF.
  • 2 Check coil cleanliness (visual through cabinet).
  • 3 Set thermostat to 23°C and run for an hour. Check humidity after.
