How to Find a TSSA-Licensed HVAC Contractor in Ontario

Anyone working on natural gas in Ontario must be TSSA-licensed. Hiring an unlicensed contractor for gas work is illegal, and your home insurance can deny related claims. Here's how to verify in 5 minutes.

What you'll need

  • Web browser

Steps

  1. 1

Ask for the contractor's TSSA number

It should appear on quotes, invoices, business cards, and websites. The format is F/S-XXXX-XXXX. (Ours: F/S-7864-0125)

  2. 2

Ask which technician will be on-site

Some contractors are licensed at the company level but send unlicensed installers. The actual person doing gas work should be G2-licensed minimum.

  3. 3

    Verify on TSSA's site

Go to tssa.org and use their public registry to look up the F/S number. Confirms the license is active and in good standing.

  4. 4

    Check ECRA/ESA for electrical work

If the install includes new circuits, ask for the ECRA/ESA license. Same logic — Ontario requires it; without it, your insurance may not cover related issues.

  5. 5

    Ask for a permit

Most municipal jurisdictions require permits on furnace and AC installs. The contractor should pull and include the permit fee in the quote. No permit = the install isn't on record = trouble at resale.

When to stop and call

If a contractor balks at any of these or can't produce credentials, walk away. We're TSSA F/S-7864-0125, ECRA-licensed, and pull permits on every install. (416) 258-2460.
