AC Repair vs Replace: The Honest Math
When to fix your air conditioner and when to replace. The 50% rule, refrigerant phase-out, and what installers won't tell you.
AC
When to fix your air conditioner and when to replace. The 50% rule, refrigerant phase-out, and what installers won't tell you.
Your AC just died. The repair quote is $1,400. A new unit is $4,800. What's the right call? Here's the math we use, applied honestly.
If the repair cost is more than 50% of replacement cost, replace. A $1,400 repair on a 12-year-old unit you'd replace for $4,800 = 29%, repair makes sense. The same $1,400 repair on a $2,400 mini-split = 58%, replace.
Take the age of the unit and multiply by the repair cost. If the result is more than the replacement cost, replace.
Example: 14-year-old AC × $1,400 repair = $19,600 (you'd replace at $5k). Walk away.
Example: 4-year-old AC × $1,400 repair = $5,600 (you'd replace at $5k). Repair.
If your AC uses R-22, you're on borrowed time. R-22 hasn't been manufactured since 2020; existing supply is reclaimed and prices keep climbing. A leak in an R-22 system can cost $800 just for the refill. R-410A is the current standard but is being phased down too — R-454B is the new low-GWP refrigerant. New systems we install are R-454B compatible.
If a tech tells you "we just need to top up the R-22," ask them to put a refrigerant cost line on the quote. Then decide.
A 2010-era 13 SEER AC running all summer might cost $400/season. A new 17 SEER model in the same home runs the same hours for ~$280. Over 15 years, that's $1,800 in savings. Not the deciding factor on its own, but real.
We give you both numbers in writing — repair cost AND replacement quote — and you decide. No upsell pressure. We're not paid commission and we'd rather you trust us for the next 20 years than squeeze one job.
